What Is Silt Soil?


Silt or soil is often referred to as fines because it is a non-plastic soil material. A soil composition is classified as silty if more than 80% of the soil composition consists of silt.

Silt soil contains high concentrations of silt, which is solid, dust-like sediment weather often deposits on the upper layers o the ground. Silt is smaller than sand but larger than clay, and people who have had dust blow on them by a gust of wind were likely being bombarded by silt. Silt improves water retention for soil.

According to USDA regulations, silt particles should be between 0.002 and 0.05 mm, making it smaller than sand but larger than clay. The sand grains are larger, while the clay grains are very fine, and the silt grains are between the sand grains and the clay grains.

Sand grains are smaller than gravel, but larger and coarser than silt. Fine soils such as silt or clay particles have a larger surface area than sand, stone or gravel. Silty soil is similar to clay, but contains fewer sand and clay particles.

Why Clay-Rich Soils Are Beneficial

The composition of your soil will most likely be composed of silt, clay, and sand particles, with varying amounts of each. The ideal soil is not predominantly sandy, silty, or clayey, but one that contains all of these particles in such quantities that each of them can manifest itself.

In fact, the only general rule most soil scientists follow for improving sandy or clay soil is to simply add organic material. Sludge consumes more and its particles are not as strong as sand, so it is easier to lose a small amount of mineral nutrients from each particle, which is much more available to plants. Sludge is usually the result of weathering, in which sand-sized quartz grains break down into smaller particles due to weaknesses in their chemical lattice structure.

The loam itself with a mud content of more than 80% can be called silt. The International Society for Soil Science ISSS defines silt as soil containing 80% or more particles ranging in size from 0.002 mm to 0.02 mm, while the USDA sets the limit at 0.05 mm.
